Why Choose Spotlights?
What’s so special about spotlights? Well, they are one of the few light fittings that will adapt to just about any situation. You want task-lighting – use a spotlight; you want accent lighting – use a spotlight; ambient lighting – use a couple of spotlights. The only place where you need to think twice is in the bathroom, where the open structure of the spotlight leaves it vulnerable to ingress of steam and water.
In technical terms, a spotlight projects a beam of less than thirty degrees, any beam of a greater angle comes from a floodlight, so now you know!
The most versatile way to install your spotlights is on a track system, which gives you the facility to place lamps anywhere you like along the length. This has to be the ultimate in versatility – not only do you have tiltability and rotation, you have moveability too. For this reason, tracks are brilliant for kitchens and bathrooms as they allow you to situate the spots over task-related areas, whilst still producing adequate general lighting. If you don’t want a full track you can fit a circular plate instead, which will allow you to have a group of, say, three lights clustered together. They are not in the same league of versatility as tracks though.
In all honesty, a track is simply a channel fitted to the ceiling or wall that holds the lamps, nevertheless, it will pay you to remember that most tracks are designed to take only the lamps in a particular range. This isn’t really an issue, as all tracks are infinitely flexible – you simply choose the lengths of track you need to put together your own spotlight configuration. However, it is advisable to choose the lamps first – then get the appropriate track to go with them.
Having decided exactly where you want your tracking to go, you need to give some thought to what kind of lamp you would prefer. In reality the choice boils down to halogen or LED as traditional light bulbs are now being phased out.
